This is a fantastic new book by Sharon Foley, called Getting to Yes: Clicker Training for Improved Horsemanship. It is very effective with Icelandic Horses / Ponies.

Lee Ziegler's book, Easy Gaited Horses, has become the bible of gaited horse owners. The book helps owners to identify the easy, smooth gaits of their Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Fox Trotters, Peruvian Pasos, Paso Finos, Icelandic Horses, and any other gaited horse breed. The book also gives hints and tips on how to get gaits naturally.

Determining the Gait of the Icelandic Horse
This slide show was created from a video of an Icelandic Horse mare being ridden bareback in halter, to see what gait she offers naturally. Stills were grabbed from the video and put in sequential order to see the timing of the diagonal legs and lateral legs, and the support phases. This was done in order to determine what gait she was doing. In this case, it is a fox trot.

This is my pinto Icelandic Horse (Pony) mare, called Cookie, who is about 10 years old. She was born in Iceland, but came to the US with her dam, as a weanling. She is very calm, very people-oriented, and a very easy keeper (too easy, as we have to watch what she eats, and not give her anything that is too high in carbs).
She learns very easily, and is very willing to do new things and learn additional behaviors and tricks.
Here she is, yawning, on the cue of the ASL (American Sign Language) sign for "Y":
